<image:title>Press - TV, Stage Producer Joe Stern Contends the Best Actors Don't Get Exposure - Joseph Stem is not your ordinary breed of theatrical producer. When he sees a reviewer at the end of a long line of people waiting to pick up her tickets for The Last Meeting of the Knights of the White Magnolia, he will step out of the box office of the Coronet Theatre (in tennis shorts!) and bring the tickets to her. He's the kind of producer who will come up to that same reviewer during intermission of Chapin at the Improvisation and ask if she thinks the music is too loud. Two years ago. Joe Stern turned his hand to producing for television. I visited him on the set where Mrs. R's Daughter was being filmed by Dan Curtis Productions (based at MGM Studios) for showing on NBC later this year. The story by Emmy award-winner George Rubino (The Last Tenant) stars Cloris Leachman, Season Hubley, Donald Moffat, Stephen Elliot and Ron Rifkin.</image:title>

<image:title>Press - Publisher's/Critics' Awards to Susan Dietz and Joseph Stern - JOSEPH STERN received the Margaret Harford Award last year from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle for "the boldness and variety of his productions and for exemplifying ! the courage, single-mindedness and occasional pugnacity implied in the ; name Actors For Themselves." He continues to fulfill tnat promise and doesn't at all mind being tagged with the description of "occasional pugnacity." Any entrepreneur knows it takes occasional pugnacity to overcome obstacles and get the job done. Joe Stem continues to offer a succession of illustrious productions at his handsome Matrix Theatre. Eminent Domain, Skirmishes and Orphans, his three 1983 offerings, each received a Drama-Logue Production Award as well as being honored in other categories. Within the three years previous to 1983, Stem's AFT ensemble at the Matrix garnered 26 Drama-Logue Awards, 14 L.A. Weekly Awards and, for his memorable production of Harold Pinter's Betrayal alone, seven LADCC Awards. Let's hear it for Joe Stem's "occasional pugnacity" which now brings him this special 1983 Drama-Logue Publisher's/Critics' Award.</image:title>

<image:title>Press - Stirring the Waiver Waters - While Los Angeles basked in the glorious victories of the Olympic Games and local theatre, particularly, was reflecting the success of the related Olympic Arts Festival, letters were being mailed from Mary Lou Herz, administrator of the 99-Seat Waiver Dept. of Actors' Equity Association to all waiver theatre manager/owners in the county informing of new policy set forth by the union. A copy of the letter was printed in Drama-Logue Issue No. 31 (Aug. 2-8, page 7). In essence, the reason stated for the letter being sent was because of the union's difficulty in obtaining Subsidiary Rights Agreements on some waiver productions because the union is unaware that a show is being produced. At the meeting of Equity's Western Advisory Board on July 5, 1984, the recommendation of the 99-Seat Waiver Committee was adopted "that all shows playing in an Equity-waiver theatre must be 'registered' with Actors' Equity Association." The letter further states that even if the theatre space qualifies as waiver, each production mounted in that space must be registered in order to obtain waiver status.</image:title>

<image:title>Press - A Theater Where the Actor Comes First - It's too bad that Joe Stern refuses to read Simon Gray's book about his experiences trying out "The Common Pursuit" at the Matrix Theater (see Barbara Isenberg's adjoining article). If he ever softens, he'll discover that Gray found him a lovable man and a patient producer. Patient???? I only hear from Stern when he's upset about something—a dumb review, some crazy new stunt from Actors' Equity. He's not too patient then. But under the surface noise you hear a serious concern for the theater. Not just his theater, but everybody's. Gray criticizes Stern for spending too much tryout time on actors who obviously weren't going to be cast in this play, or perhaps any play. That's because Stern understands the agony actors go through at auditions, having been one himself. What does he call his organization? "Actors for Themselves." The record hasn't been that altruistic, but the title shows Stern's priorities. The guy just loves actors. Even better, he believes in them. That's rare these days. Everybody gives lip service to the idea that the actor is as central to the theater as the priest is to the Mass.</image:title>

<image:title>Press - Hometown Boy Makes Waves - Joseph Stern is back and he's mad as hell and not going to let us take it anymore. "The actor is an endangered species." producer Stern is saying, standing on the deck of his Pacific Palisades home. "Between the economy, the lack of funding, and its effect on our standards, actors are not practicing their art. They're not doing something else. They're not directing, or writing their memoirs. They're just wailing for the next gig." Stern lists actors who quit the profession. He mentions stars who live in Los Angeles, yet never work on local stages. He speaks rapid-fire, sounding more adolescent than middle-aged, despite his 53 years. After a three-year absence while working as co-executive and executive producer of the New York-based NBC-TV series "Law & Order," Stern has returned lo his hometown and his first love, the theater, specifically, his own theater, the Matrix, at 7657 Melrose Ave.. where he's currently producing a critically acclaimed revival of George M. Cohan's 1920 melodrama "The Tavern." (The show continues through Feb. 13.)</image:title>

<image:title>Press - Matrix Producer Joe Stern Tests the Comfort Zone in New Play, 'Neighbors' - Joe Stern can't be trusted. The veteran producer of theater, film and TV can't be trusted to navigate in tame waters. In a conscious from-the-gut decision, the award-winning Stern has made a 180-degree turnabout in his focus and programming at The Matrix, the theatre he has operated on Melrose Avenue since 1976. Long considered a great white-bread bastion of good theater, The Matrix over the years has produced a remarkable catalogue of award-winning plays, including Becket's 'Waiting for Godot,' Pinter's 'The Birthday Party' and George M. Cohan's 'The Tavern,' all starring top-notch professional actors. 'The mission of the Matrix has always been staging classical work using great actors,' Stern explains in prefacing his change of direction.</image:title>
